Is Your Home Wired for Summer? A Pre-Season Electrical Checklist
April 17, 2026
Summer in Sacramento means triple-digit heat, AC units running around the clock, extra miles on your car (and EV charging station), pool pumps humming, and outdoor entertaining that stretches well into the evening. All of that can strain your home’s electrical system, and most homeowners don’t think about it until something goes wrong.
The good news? A little prevention goes a long way. Running through a simple pre-season electrical checklist now can save you from a mid-July breaker meltdown, a safety hazard, or an expensive emergency call. Here’s what to look at before the heat hits.
Start at the Electrical Panel
Your main electrical panel is the heart of your home’s power. Summer loads are heavier than any other season, so this is the best place to start.
- Look for signs of wear or damage. Rust, scorch marks, or a burning smell near the panel are red flags that need immediate professional attention.
- Check for frequently tripping breakers. If certain breakers trip often, that circuit may be overloaded. This problem is common when AC units, refrigerators, and other appliances compete for the same power.
- Know your panel’s age. Panels older than 25–30 years may not be equipped to handle modern electrical loads. If yours is getting up there, it might be time to talk to a licensed electrician about an electrical panel restoration service or full panel replacement.
- Look for double-tapped breakers. That’s when two wires are connected to a single breaker terminal. Double-tapped breakers present a safety issue that’s surprisingly common in older homes.
If anything looks off, don’t ignore it. Electrical panels aren’t a DIY situation, and the risk of fire or shock is real.
Inspect Your Outlets and GFCIs
GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are those little receptacles with the “Test” and “Reset” buttons. They are required by code in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor spaces as a safety precaution. Why? GFCIs cut power almost instantly if they detect an imbalance that could cause a shock or fire.
Before summer gets going, take a few minutes to:
- Test every GFCI outlet by pressing the “Test” button. The outlet should lose power. Hit “Reset” to restore it. If it doesn’t respond correctly, it needs to be replaced.
- Check outdoor outlets for weatherproofing. Outlets used outdoors need to have in-use covers (the bubble-style covers that stay closed even with a plug inserted). Exposed outlets in wet conditions are a shock and fire hazard.
- Look for outlets that feel warm, spark, or are discolored. Any of these symptoms point to a wiring problem that needs a professional’s eye.
If your older home doesn’t have GFCI outlets in wet areas, now is a great time to get them installed. It’s a relatively inexpensive upgrade with a big safety payoff.
Check the Circuits That Get Hit Hardest in Summer
Some areas of your home draw significantly more power during the summer months. A professional can help you check the circuits most at risk during the warmer months:
Air Conditioning
- Make sure your AC unit is on a dedicated circuit. With such a heavy load, it shouldn’t be sharing power with other appliances.
- Listen for unusual sounds or watch for lights that dim when the AC kicks on. That flickering can signal an overloaded circuit or a loose connection.
Kitchen
- Refrigerators work harder in the heat. Make sure the outlet behind yours isn’t warm to the touch or showing signs of wear.
- If you’re running a window unit in addition to other appliances, be mindful of load. Multiple high-draw appliances on the same circuit can trip breakers repeatedly.
Garage and Outdoor Spaces
- Pool pumps, hot tubs, outdoor lighting, and EV chargers draw significant power. If you’re adding or upgrading any of these this summer, have a licensed electrician assess whether your current setup can handle the load.
- Check extension cords used for outdoor equipment. They shouldn’t be running under rugs or through doorways, and they’re not meant to be permanent wiring solutions. Instead, see if you can get an outlet installed closer to where you need power.
Don’t Overlook Surge Protection
Summer storm season brings lightning, and even a nearby strike can send a power surge through your home’s wiring that fries electronics, appliances, and HVAC equipment in seconds. Power-strip surge protectors offer some protection, but they don’t cover your whole home.
Whole-home surge protection is installed directly at your electrical panel and guards everything connected to your home’s wiring, including your HVAC system, refrigerator, washer/dryer, and smart home devices. For homeowners in the Sacramento area who’ve invested in quality appliances or electronics, it’s one of the smarter upgrades you can make.
Outdoor Lighting and Summer Entertaining
If you’re planning to spend more time outside this summer, your outdoor lighting setup deserves a look too.
- Swap out any burned-out or flickering exterior fixtures. Poor connections in outdoor lighting can attract insects and create fire hazards.
- Consider LED upgrades. LED fixtures use a fraction of the electricity of older incandescent bulbs, run cooler, and last far longer, all of which can save you money (especially during peak summer usage).
- Think about lighting placement and coverage. Well-placed outdoor lighting improves both safety and curb appeal, especially for evening gatherings.
When to Call a Licensed Electrician
When feeling unsure about your home’s electrical system, it’s always safer to call in a professional than to guess. You should contact a licensed electrician if you notice:
- Breakers that trip repeatedly and won’t stay reset
- Outlets or switches that are warm, discolored, loose, or sparking
- A burning smell anywhere near your panel or wiring
- Flickering lights throughout the house
- An outdated panel that needs assessment
- During any new major installation, like pool equipment.
Electrical issues don’t fix themselves, and they tend to get worse under the increased strain of summer usage.
