5 Common Heating Issues & When to Call an Expert

Many HVAC repairs require an easy fix that can be solved with routine maintenance. It can be as simple as changing the filter or cleaning the coils. But when the issue is much more complex, you need the knowledge of a professional to service the unit.

In this article, we’ll cover five of the most common heating issues that require the skills of a professional to repair. As tempting as it may be, It is always recommended to seek help from a licensed HVAC technician. Unless otherwise noted, we don’t recommend attempting the repairs below on your own.

1. Dirty or Ill-fitting Air Filter

A dirty or ill-fitting air filter can be a major culprit that causes a HVAC System to run down. Homeowners should routinely change their home air filter at least every six months. If you notice after changing the filter that the system is still working harder than it should, reach out to a professional for their insight and diagnosis.

2. Thermostat Stops Working

If your thermostat suddenly stops working, you may be able to resolve the issue by simply replacing the battery. Once the new battery is in and the thermostat still won’t work, it’s time to make a service call.

3. Dirty Coils

Dirt and debris slipping into the unit will clog it, and the system won’t work as intended. When the system isn’t heating your home efficiently and your coils are dirty, it’s time for a professional cleaning. Each component of the unit will receive the attention it needs, and the coils and filters will be inspected.

4. Blower Won’t Stop Running

If the fan switch on the thermostat is in the “Off” position, but the blower continues to run, there could be several reasons the unit won’t shut down. The relay may have gotten stuck, preventing the system from turning off. Or one of the safety sensors inside the unit may be damaged. When this happens, the unit won’t shut off. To figure out what’s causing the blower motor to stay on, you’ll need a trained service technician to diagnose the problem.

5. Noisy Furnace

It’s common for you to hear noises coming from the furnace. But, when there’s a sound you’ve never heard before, like squealing or a whining motor, a mechanical problem is probably causing your furnace issues. It may be the blower motor or the inducer motor could have a loose bearing. The solution is to have a new motor installed.

Other noises could point to issues with the burners or airflow. Whatever these sounds are, pay attention and have the system inspected by a professional to ensure nothing has failed inside the unit.
